The '''smoke grenade''' is is a canister-type grenade used for a variety and diversity of reasons. There are a variety of smoke-producing items, few of which have been observed being in use by the [[UNSC]].  

Like [[signal flare]]s, the smoke grenades are used to signal for pickup after a mission, or a request for an [[equipment]] drop, or even a need for emergency evacuation. In ''[[Halo: Reach]]'', the serial number M45A771B is printed on the canister; the same serial number is printed on the [[40mm grenade]] (albeit mirrored), the [[M392 DMR]], and the [[MA37 assault rifle]], it is likely all four items share the same decal sheet.
