:The laser beam itself is invisible - what we see is the air directly in its path being superheated to a plasma. The colour of that plasma would depend on several things - the lasing medium (what it's travelling through) and the frequency of the beam itself. If I recall correctly, red shifting is higher frequency while blue shifting is lower frequency - which is why the Brute Plasma Rifle is more powerful than the regular Elite version. It's not unique to lasers, either - anything that superheats the air does that.
