We can deduce two things. They fought against the Covenant prior to the Human-Covenant war and the Great Schism. And They are '''not''' Covenant. The Great Schism was an internal conflict. It was a civil war where Prophet of Truth kicked the Elites out, and fueled the Jiralhanae-Sangheili feud into a civil war.
