:Parts of it are word-for-word, but it does definitely expand on the game. There's whole new subplots about a group of ODSTs and the Covenant and there's a fair amount of things that happen between the levels and in different parts of the ring. The Chief's characterization is slightly different from Nylund's; whether this is a good thing or not is a matter of taste. If you want to know all there is to know, then sure, it's worth getting. You just have to take it for what it is - as a novelization of the game, there are parts which directly rehash it.
