The Flood, a virulent species of parasites, is an anomaly in all known biology, and an anomaly to regular life. Their foreign nature relative to native life is a clear indicator of their nature as an extra-galactic species.<ref name="bestiarum"/> It is extremely adaptive, and mutates hosts through different stages of accelerated "evolution", where the body of biomatter accelerates its own evolution to the point of a massive biological breakdown, whereby the infection can first take place.
The Flood is an anomaly in all known biology.Their foreign nature relative to native life is a clear indicator of their nature as an extra-galactic species.<ref name="bestiarum"/> It is extremely adaptive, and mutates hosts to suit the species' current needs.

All Flood biomatter is made of a unique "super cell", which relays information between cells and can flex and move like a muscle.  To begin mutation of a host, Infection Forms inject these cells into the victim's body. The cells then consume the nutrients within the host cells and convert them into more Flood super cells, which use the body's biomass to grow various appendages as needed.

The only known pathway for Flood reproduction and survival is by the infestation and assimilation of other species. They accomplish this via process that mirrors  the infection capabilities of both viruses and bacteria, where the Flood cells enter the host body, overtaking the host's cells via overwriting its genetic code and reshaping the cells into more Flood cells. In the process of the genetic and cellular conversion, they also digest the host material.
