Leatherneck was a nickname earned by U.S. Marines in the era of the Continental Marines. The Marines would wear leather collars to provide protection from slashing attacks as they boarded enemy ships. Although an appropriate reference to Marines, the term "Leatherneck" and "soldier" are viewed by their respective servicemembers as being incompatible, and a means of differentiating between service in the Marine Corps or Army.

*Technically, they can't aim, since none of the Human weapons in Halo have iron sights, and Spartans don't need them. Marines don't need them either actually, since they use a green colored display in front of their eyes that acts very similar to a HUD.
**Marines in Halo 2 and 3 don't have this display over their eye, however it can be guessed that technology has improven and they have a kind of HUD built into their nueral interface (which would actually be quite effective), and can turn it off and on at any time.
