Personnel within this group are regarded as some of the most skilled warriors of the Covenant military, sent in to accomplish the most covert and dangerous operations. Ranks for the Special Operations span across both the Unggoy and Sangheili species. Although there is only one Grunt rank, three have been identified for the Elites.

Thus far no distinctions have been made between the armour of a regular Spec Ops Elite and that of a Special Operations Officer. However there have been noticable changes in the armour that the group as a whole have worn across the games. In ''Halo: Combat Evolved'' all of the Special Operations Elites that were featured wore a jet black version of the traditional combat harness. In ''Halo 2'' their combat harness was again dark, but with a pearlescent-purple shade. And when the unit finally returned in ''Halo: Reach'' it was with a dim brown-maroon hue.
