== Origin ==
The term originated from ''Halo Custom Edition'' modding.{{fact}} When modders first figured out how to put non-playable characters (NPCs), like Elites and Grunts, onto maps, they found that when a player was killed by an NPC, the game would display "You were killed by <insert missing string>." Eventually, someone created a map in which this string was replaced with "the Guardians"; this stuck in the modding community to the point where few, if any, mods used different strings. Bungie took notice of this, and applied it to ''Halo 2'' and ''Halo 3''.
