While reflecting on his life during his battle with the Didact John stated that he did not remember anything from his childhood from before his conscription: not his name, his family, his home, except the King of the Hill game he played with the other children in his school's playground. Through thirty years of warfare he was always prepared to die in battle, but when he was about to die by Didact's hand on Gamma Halo, he discovered he was not ready to die. After defeating the Didact, John continued to obsessively embark on new missions even after receiving an R&R order from Lord Hood.

By the time of the Installation 07 conflict, John seemed to have become somewhat more open, opening up to Fernando Esparza about his failure to stop Cortana and comforting the man over his losses. However, John was visibly surprised and didn't know how to react when Esparza hugged him. At the same time, John only reluctantly worked with the Weapon and made no secret of the fact that he didn't trust her despite the fact that John couldn't have accomplished the things that he did on Installation 07 without her help. This stemmed from the Weapon being a copy of Cortana and presumably lingering hurt and distrust caused by Cortana's betrayal. After being confronted by the Weapon multiple times over his behavior and the AI finally discovering the truth, John chose not to delete her because he did want to trust her even though he didn't yet.
