Mu is most likely named after a [[Wikipedia:Mu (lost continent)|mythical lost continent]] of Earth legend, which has been variously placed in the Atlantic or Pacific oceans. Similar to Atlantis, in that its inhabitants were supposed to be the founders of later Egyptian and Mesoamerican civilizations. The lost islands of Lemuria were said to be the peaks of the mountains of Mu. It has been proven geologically impossible for such a continent to exist<ref>[[Wikipedia:Mu (lost continent)|Wikipedia]]</ref>, though some people continue to believe such a tale.
