During the first day of the [[Battle for Earth]], his squad was dispatched from the {{UNSCShip|In Amber Clad}} from ''[[Cairo Station]]'' to relieve the UNSC's ground forces and to board the Covenant assault carrier, ''[[Solemn Penance]]''. Shortly after deployment, their [[D77-TC Pelican]] [[dropship]] was shot down over [[Old Mombasa]] by a [[Type-47A Scarab]] walker. He survived the crash, but his squad was soon attacked by a [[Covenant]] patrol.
During the [[Battle of Mombasa]], Fones belonged to "Second Squad", serving aboard the {{UNSCShip|In Amber Clad}}. He was deployed to the [[Battle of Mombasa]] on [[2552#October|October 2552]], under the command of [[Gunnery Sergeant]] [[Marcus Stacker]].{{Ref/Reuse|beach}}


Fones and his squad were aboard a [[D77-TC Pelican]] [[dropship]] when it was shot down by a {{Pattern|Protos|Scarab}} walker on approach to an area in [[New Mombasa]], [[Kenya]]. After their Pelican made a rough landing outside of an [[Hotel Zanzibar|abandoned beachside hotel]] in [[Old Mombasa]], Fones reported that [[O'Brien (ODST)|O'Brien]] was killed on impact. He, along with his squad quickly moved out to get better cover, and headed toward [[Hotel Zanzibar]]. During a skirmish with camouflaged [[Sangheili]], a {{Pattern|Anskum|plasma grenade}} had landed on Fones's helmet. Using quick reflexes, the [[ODST]] was able to remove his headgear and hurl it toward the camouflaged Sangheili's position on higher ground. There, Sergeant Stacker and his team saw the charging soldier, only after it had held [[Walpole]] as a prisoner. [[Butkus]] opened fire with an overcharged [[plasma pistol]] at the Sangheili, as Stacker shot the Sangheili in the head with his [[BR55 battle rifle]].{{Ref/Reuse|beach}}
When the squad was pinned down by a [[Kig-Yar Sniper]], Jones, as the squad's own sniper, neutralized the Jackal with his "[[SRS99C-S2 AMB Sniper Rifle|welcome-to-Earth gift basket]]", causing the lance's [[Unggoy]] to flee the area. A [[Active Camouflage|camouflaged]] [[Sangheili]] then sneaked up on the squad and took Jones hostage by holding an [[Type-1 Energy Weapon/Sword|energy sword]] held at the sniper's throat. One of Jones' squadmates, [[Butkus]], wielding an overcharged [[Type-25 Directed Energy Pistol|plasma pistol]], along with Gunnery Sergeant Stacker using his [[BR55 battle rifle]], killed the alien and freed Jones. His subsequent fate is unknown, although it is possible that he returned to the ''In Amber Clad'' with the rest of his squad and accompanied [[John-117]] to [[Installation 05]], participating in the [[Battle of Installation 05|battle]] there. Like all ODSTs, Jones is very tough and professional. He is an excellent marksman, and is not afraid of enemy snipers. He also has a notable sense of humor, even in combat, as evidenced by his desire to provide the Kig-Yar a "Welcome to Earth" 'gift basket'. When he is being held hostage by a Sangheili, he orders the team to kill the Sangheili instead of saving him.
*In the original ''Halo 2'' cinematic by Bungie, Fones and Stacker shared the same facial model, but Stacker was distinguished by the blood on his left cheek. In the remastered cinematic by [[Blur Studio]], Fones' appearance was given a unique facial model which featured a blonde mohawk.
