OMG the entire article is speculation! What is if they dont fly on the home planet of them? Please remove the fanfiction part that they evolved on a moon.
Yes... but its all backed up by science and logic so its fairly acceptable, unlike a pointless and refutable, unsigned outburst such as that.

- You don't evolve wings to counter gravity. The pressure in the "Twilight Zone" of the Pacific ocean is so much that were you to be there, you would im - plode due to it. - Flight is pretty complicated, simply flapping doesn't cut it. It's rather unlikely that such a specialized mechanism would be there's suddenly on Earth when it was useless on their homeworld. Even on a heavier planet, though, it may be due to the atmosphere, as with a sufficiently thick one a winged creature could pull off a "swimming" akin to flight. - Evolution is very random. If an animal evolves wings it isn't because it needs to fly its because a mutation that led to giving them the ability to fly. Of course the possibility that it had a dense atmosphere makes a lot of sense. Lift is all about surface area. The higher the gravity the more surface area needed unless the atmosphere is dense enough. Dense atmosphere gives you more lift for less surface area. Some animals loose their ability to fly and use whats lift of their wings to do other things. Example, to create the illusion that the animal is bigger. It is also possible that it had many functions at the beginning and eventually evolved to be so big that the wings gave the Yanme the ability to fly. Many possibilities. Evolution is random. Even so, it doesn't change the fact that flight is complicated, and such specialized systems perfectly suited for them are unlikely to have come about when there was no need for them. Imagine if we had a pack of lions that had grown propellors on their backs, which they could use to fly on the Moon but not here. You could argue that the lions use them to cool themselves off, but it takes more than just fans to fly. You'd need the proper fan-shape, the ability to steer, the strength connecting them so they don't tear off in lift-off, a fast enough spinning speed, and the main body itself to be light enough for flight. Those factors would never come up unless flight for them was allowed on Earth, otherwise they would simply never come. It's also entirely possible that the lions without propellors would dominate anyway; maybe their environment, being a jungle, is better suited for creatures that are smaller and able to fit through tighter spaces. Either way, if the Drone wings were just intended for show, then that's all they would do anywhere. Natural selection works by keeping those whose traits benefit them to survive; by law it has to benefit it NOW, or the trait is simply lost. Tuckerscreator(stalk)
