Private Hayes was a human UNSC Marine attached to the 717th Xeno-Materials Exploitation Battalion.[3]

Biography

A private of the UNSC Marine Corps, Hayes was attached to Corporal Phaetus' Third Squad of the 717th Xeno-Materials Exploitation Battalion when the battalion was posted to the human Outer Colony of Gao in 2553 to retrieve Forerunner ancilla Intrepid Eye on the planet.[3]

On July 2, 2553, while searching the Montero Cave System for the ancilla, Third Squad came across the corpse of a Gao citizen murdered by Intrepid Eye. Sent as a runner, Hayes directly reported the discovery to the rest of the battalion's personnel in the caverns. Upon learning of the body, Major Ira Halal of the UNSC Judge Advocate General's Corps had Hayes bring him to the crime scene alone so that the major could inspect the body, fearing the Gao Ministry of Protection would tamper with the evidence to frame the battalion for the murder.[3] While traveling to the crime scene, the two were watched by Intrepid Eye and Lifeworker Huragok Roams Alone. When the Huragok suddenly descended to Hayes' side, the startled Marine swung his weapon towards Roams Alone. However, Intrepid Eye promptly struck Hayes with three thousand volts of electricity. As Hayes fell to the ground in spasms, he erratically began firing his sidearm until it depleted its ammunition. When Roams Alone attempted to heal Hayes, Halal did not understand the Huragok's intentions and attacked him. In response, Intrepid Eye disarmed and mortally wounded him. As the Huragok and ancilla left the area, Hayes and Halal both eventually succumbed to their wounds and died.[1] After discovering their bodies and examining the crime scene, Blue Team bagged and cached their corpses for later retrieval in the caves.[4] Fred's party later recovered the bodies on their way out of the caves.[5]
