On Halopedia, CheckUser is a tool that can be accessed by the administration to examine user IP information and other server log data under certain circumstances, for the purposes of protecting Halopedia against disruption and abuse. CheckUser itself simply produces log information for checking; it can require considerable skill and experience to investigate cases even with the tool.

Grounds for checking

The CheckUser tool is to be used to fight vandalism, to check for sockpuppet activity, to limit disruption or potential disruption of the Halopedia project, and to investigate legitimate concerns of bad faith editing or suspected ban-evading in cases of extreme vandalism.

The tool should not be used for political control; for example, to apply pressure on editors or as a threat against another editor in a content dispute. Like all restricted tools, it is to be used to keep Halopedia clear of vandalism, spam, and users who make malicious edits, but not for simple disagreements between actions in good faith.

CheckUser and privacy policy

The CheckUser feature accesses non-public information that is stored on a private log. Information revealed from checkuser checks may be occasionally shared amongst the administration for discussion or investigation purposes, but such information is never given out to the public. The privacy of Halopedia's editors is taken extremely seriously, and there may at times when a conflict between the high priorities is given to both protecting the Wiki from damage and disruption, and privacy of even problematic users. This is a very delicate area and at times no solution is ideal.

List of users with CheckUser access

Users with CheckUser access are listed here. If you suspect malicious sockpuppet activity, you can contact any of these users to investigate, however, evidence must be provided with any report made. A CheckUser will, if necessary, take further action if results are positive. However, any information relative to an investigation is never released publicly.
