"Halopedia can tell you nearly anything you may need to know about Halo. Halopedia is also a wiki, which means it's constantly expanding. It knows everything about the Halo games, books, upcoming movie, and other appearances, and with your help, it can grow even larger. But how can one trust a wiki? Surely some crazy could come in and troll the entire place up. Well... they could, but they wouldn't get too far. Halopedia is guarded by rabid watchdog-like fans who are constantly watching the Recent Changes page to check for the slightest error, either grammar or factual. Okay, that's a bit exaggerated. The real deal is that Halopedia is under almost constant watch by someone who can set everything right. With 3 very responsible sysops and a mob of other users, Halopedia is in safe hands. Be sure to check out Halopedia and even you could find something to contribute."
Dragonclaws's description of the wiki. (2006)[1]

Halopedia is a wiki about the Halo fictional universe. It covers the Halo video games, from Halo: Combat Evolved to Halo 5: Guardians; tie-in media and merchandise including published literature, films and action figures; as well as notable people associated with the franchise. Much like Wookieepedia, Halopedia is a fan-driven encyclopedia and is not an official party of the Halo franchise; thus, it is not itself a primary source of Halo information but rather an aggregate of content based on official media.

Halopedia runs on MediaWiki and is privately hosted. The site is also available in several other languages, including French, German, Greek, Italian, Japanese, Polish, Spanish, Korean and Russian. However, the English one is the most up-to-date version, with the others having very little content.

Hello, and Welcome to Halopedia!

Halopedia Improvement I WANT YOU.png

Welcome to the best place to learn everything about the universe of Halo.

If you're not a big Halo fan, then this probably isn't the place for you. All information held within the confines of this wiki are related to Halo, either directly, or peripherally.

Ah, the timeless question: What exactly is a wiki? Well, a wiki is a site where anybody -- not just webmasters or members -- can edit any page. Wikis are best used for collaborative knowledge-base type documents. For instance, one of the most successful wikis is the Wikipedia.

What this means is that you could be an important author on Halopedia. Know about some hidden cache of weapons that could help you bust up the Flood? Do you know every tiny glitch in all the games? Wanna help us catalog EVERYTHING about Halo? Go ahead! If you ever need to find something, use the search bar. It should help you find what you're looking for. If you know the exact page title of the thing you are looking for, hit "Enter" instead of clicking "Search" to go directly to that page.

If you decide to stick around, use the log in link at the top of this page to set up a username. To edit a page, click the "Edit" link at the top of any page. Please be polite, and briefly describe any changes you make in the "Summary" text field on the edit page. Your "Summary" comments will appear on the recent changes page. This wiki does not support fan-fiction or any other Halo self-creations. The only page you can edit however you wish is your user page, which you will receive when you log in.

If you ever have questions about the wiki, feel free to type them up in the help page. A knowledgeable person will most likely provide you with an answer within a few minutes. This wiki is absolutely free; no money is ever paid. Ever.

We hope you'll feel welcome here amongst fellow fans of the greatest game of all time.

History

Main article: Halopedia:History

Halopedia began in 2004, and has had a long, awesome, and interesting history since its inception.

Halo Wiki, as it was known back then, was founded by Template:Name, with the help of Template:Name who hosted the site, and launched on November 4, 2004. Initially created to supplement his clan, the site shifted its focus to cover the Halo universe in later periods. After the creation of halowiki.net, the site was renamed to "Halopedia" and moved its domain to www.halopedia.org. Halopedia and halowiki.net remained sister projects with very different goals; Halopedia concerned itself with the canon of the Halo universe, while halowiki.net was essentially a "multiplayer repository"; halowiki.net has since gone inactive. Since the renaming, Halopedia has actively documented the developments of the Halo franchise and the fictional universe, along with gameplay information and help.[1]

In 2006, the original host was unable to financially support the wiki, prompting Halopedia to merge with Wikia's Halo Wiki site.[2] From 2007 to 2010, Halopedia was one of Wikia's most active and popular wikis following the release of Halo 3, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. In 2009, the wiki was awarded as the "Best Resource Website of 2009" by Hawty McBloggy, later a member of 343 Industries.[3]

Following a mandatory skin change and stricter Terms of Use in mid-2010 by Wikia, Halopedia moved back to an independent domain, hosted by the previous host.[4][5]

Halopedia has come to be regarded as accurate and reliable among the Halo fanbase and media alike,[6] and has been used as a source for several works of published literature.[7][8][9][10][11][12]

Wiki etiquette

All Halopedians are expected to conform to a certain level of civility in writing articles and talk posts. While most of the Halo games are "M" rated - for peoples of 17+ or older, excessive cursing or lasciviousness are strictly prohibited. Declarations of hate that are said unjokingly, like "I hate you", are also prohibited.

If you're still unsure of how stuff works around here, you may want to check out the MediaWiki User's Guide. There you will learn how to make bold, italics, and other wiki stuff. Out of courtesy, you really shouldn't edit pages unless you are adding something meaningful (fixing grammar and spelling mistakes is okay). You also shouldn't delete pages unless you have an extremely good reason. If you want to play around and get a feel for editing pages, please do so in the Sandbox. If you want to get a good grasp of how the pages here are put together, be sure to read about our Manual of Style for pages.

The Wikipedia has a great etiquette section. They cover a lot of information about what is accepted and what is not accepted on a wiki. There are really no rules, but there is a definite level of etiquette involved. Some of the suggestions they offer are only relevant to the Wikipedia, but many of them apply to any wiki. Anyone interested in being a valuable contributor to any wiki should read them.

A Warning

Above all, never use defamatory language or deface documents our community has worked hard to create. Note that the wiki gives everyone the ability to revert documents back to their original state. Therefore, no one can permanently harm the wiki by deleting pages. All an offender will accomplish is to slightly annoy our wiki community. After repeated defacings our administrators will permanently block the offender's IP address. If defamatory language is seen it will be changed or deleted.

Thank you for visiting Halopedia! Let's get it on!
