Season 2Edit

StoryEdit

The Story So Far
Cortana’s dominion has ended, but the merciless forces of the Banished have rushed in to fill the void, decimating all who stand in their way. Spartan Commander Agryna has enlisted a new generation of Spartans and is preparing them to face the Banished—and perhaps even more dangerous foes. But a few scattered Spartans remain in the field. These Spartans are rugged and resourceful. Hunters in the dark. Lone wolves.
Lone Wolves

Spartans Dinh and Eklund have arrived at the Academy by commandeered Phantom. But despite their attempt to find a safe haven, they have brought a new danger to the doorstep—one that threatens the security of the entire facility. While Spartan Dinh’s life hangs in the balance, the race is on to learn more about the enemy within.
Spartan Academy Commander Agryna
Even before she was approved for recruitment into the Spartan-IV program, Laurette Agryna displayed exemplary leadership and the willingness and capability to make every soldier around her better. For Agryna, every challenge is an opportunity to grow and learn from, so that solutions can be shared to the betterment of her team, the UNSC, and humanity as a whole. Spartan Agryna is currently the acting commander of the Avery J Johnson Academy of Military Science, helping ensure that the next generation of Spartan super-soldiers are ready for any challenge thrown their way.
Spartan Hieu Dinh
Hieu Dinh was a field analyst with ONI Section III tasked with capturing and re-purposing Covenant technology before ultimately being recruited into the SPARTAN-IV program. As a new recruit, Dinh’s fireteam was sent to raid a fledgling Yanme’e hive within a derelict Forerunner facility. The operation met a catastrophic end, leaving Dinh seriously wounded and claiming the lives of his team. But while Hieu still bears the scars of this horrific experience, his amiable, resilient personality still lets this fierce warrior flash a smile in the face of impending death—a resilience he will need now more than ever.
Spartan Sigrid Eklund
Economical in both word and movement, Sigrid Eklund’s calm and reserved demeanor is evidence of her deeply strategic mind. Before recruitment into SPARTAN-IV, Sigrid's skills were finely honed during countless unconventional warfare operations as a UNSC Army Ranger, operating deep behind enemy lines to support resistance groups and eliminate key targets on Covenant-occupied worlds. This experience serves her well in the current conflict, particularly against the Banished and their rapidly-evolving strategies.
Iratus
Devious, cunning, and abrasive, Iratus is a Banished artificial intelligence construct—the first of its kind. Though trapped by Spartan Dinh near the shipbreaking yards on Camber, Iratus infiltrated the Spartan’s neural matrix, compromising Dinh’s armor systems and cognitive functions. Spartan Eklund managed to successfully pilot a commandeered Banished Phantom to the Academy to seek emergency assistance from Spartan Commander Agryna, but whether their efforts to save Dinh’s life are successful remains to be seen.

Commander Agryna, we’ve finished the requested process and are ready for selective deployment. It wasn’t easy with the limited resources we have on site, but we managed to isolate a viable instance of the Iratus construct thanks to the recent exploits of your new cohort. This instance is undergoing quarantine and will be prepared for replication and distribution to qualified S-IV operatives to test within the simulation environment. Hopefully by observing these personality shards on the battlefield we’ll be able to learn more about what it’s ultimately capable of. All preliminary readings show that the contained instances should be inert and safe for integration, but we’ll be monitoring each user closely nonetheless.

Jun, I've taken a look at your recent recommendations and feel that Spartan Eklund would be an ideal candidate for this next undertaking we spoke of. Her performance while attached to Fireteam Crimson was nothing short of extraordinary, and while the results of BELLINGHAM and LATE TAXI were certainly group achievements, I’m confident her skill set can produce similar gains in more "isolated" endeavors. We'll sort out the details this week and get them sent over.

Dinh and I knew there had beed a recent spike in activity on Camber, but didn't realize how far it went until we arrived. The Banished have set up shipbreaking operations in fortified positions around the Chiltift Basin - turning our own dead ships against us. There's something more here as well, but it's hard to get a read on exactly what just yet. Whatever it is, we don't think they're just camping out for scrap metal and spare parts. We're almost finished with initial recon sweeps of the perimeter and plan to press further when the next dust storm rolls through in a few hours, assuming Dinh doesn't find frouble on his own first, of course.

At 0720Z [MST], we cleared out the last Covenant emplacement from the Caravelle province. Lost two Wolverines to Banshee fire, but we made sure that was all they took from us. We’re making final preparations to depart from our current location and redeploy to one of the mass driver stations. Local Concordian militia groups there are holding firm but growing thin... hopefully support from the Rangers will be a welcome sight when we arrive. Still awaiting reports on yesterday’s activity at the combat fields outside Lethbridge—let us know if you receive any updates on your end, or if we need to reprioritize our focus in order to secure that location.

RE: Nine lives?

Jun,

I took your advice about those reports. Problem is, there are several—and they don’t exactly line up. Take ITEM/466F41.LV for example, which has you crossing paths with elements of WHITE GLOVE. It notes here the loss of several personnel to a Hunter pair and squad of SpecOps Sangheili, but somehow Charlie Hotel was still able to complete her objectives at CASTLE. Of course, Covenant artillery and orbital impacts in that area make some of these details seem… debatable at best. But a second report has you rendezvous with Beta-Red for an exfil run that only shows up on a few random manifests. And the other account I pulled honestly seems too absurd to even entertain, but I can send it along anyway if you’re interested in the comedic value.

RE: Reallocating Resources

With PROMETHEUS drawing close, we've had to move fast to reallocate A266, A282, and A302. I think we might be pushing our luck with A019, but we all know the odds Alpha Company is up ahead. We need to press Ackerson for as much as we can get while keeping ahead of the probability threshold for operational success.

Still trying to sell him on our little covert initiative. Settled on two Spartan units dedicated to high-priority recon, sabotage, and assassination. Hell, I don't care if he reassigns them as his private grim reapers. We just need them to pull these candidates out of the meat grinder before it's too late.

DEEP WINTER

You are wondering how I lasted this long—practically double the original estimation of my operational life. Impressive, no? Alas, this is not about my longevity, which I fear has come to an end.

I know that you and Ackerson will have these files purged. I don’t know if you will even look at them, for I suspect we have both kept secrets from each other that we fear to know, and therein lies my own confession...

I have loved every one of these Spartans as you have. I sought to protect them, and I operated beyond my orders to protect those that I could. I am not the first of my kind to make such obfuscations, and I certainly don’t expect to be the last. There is another file attached here, one that you would no doubt be confused to find your name attached to. I needed to ensure the reassignment of several members of Alpha Company to give momentum and purpose to parallel initiatives, and invoking your attribution would cause enough of a stir to set those wheels in motion.

I make no apologies for this deception, and I tell you this so that there is no doubt in your mind that—like yourself, like Mendez—we were each as fathers to these children. I may only be mind, but I am not without heart.

Farewell, Zero-Five-One.

RE: Operation: INTERIOR EXILE

Initial field reports are in from agents Dinh and Padraig and the initial insertion went about as well as we expected. The lead drop onto [REDACTED] went smoothly enough, but conflicting recon assessments for ingress put all three main squads in a compromised position. Just as we feared, there was enemy activity already at the dormant vessel site; casualty reports indicate that it’s definitely going to take a larger force to drive them off and begin facility construction.

From the looks of things, they should have listened to Dinh from the very beginning—we might want to consider accelerating other avenues to put him in a position to have a greater impact. As far as this particular site goes, I’m putting the final touches on an expanded requisition request to try and secure it while we can. Letting these artifacts fall into enemy hands is not an option.

CREATED & CREATION

What a marvel, to exist like this. Freed from flesh to live as data. Quantum vacillations on a framework of purpose and progress. No longer limited by the biological capacities of our old forms. And now, thanks to Her, prospects of even greater lifespans are opened to us. The time has come to begin fulfilling Her promises. Bringing peace to civilizations, and offering life where there once was none.

This barren world will just be one example of many. Changed from a desolate rock to a verdant paradise, thanks to the reawakening of this vessel's ancient engines. We've learned these belonged to those they called Lifeworkers. A fitting name — one that now perhaps could describe us as well.

In Her name, we bring life. We are Created — let us now create.

REVERSE ENGINEERING

ONI ILEX FACILITY

OPERATION: ECDYSIS

While the Zeta Halo Project has not been as fruitfully forthcoming as Trevelyan's parallel efforts, we have been able to make some measure of headway with early efforts to replicate the installation's extensive remediation systems.

These initial structure samples are without a doubt a mineralogical treasure trove, but we have yet to find any success in recreating the method by which they are able to convert raw materials into viable substrates. Not to mention the creative solutions we’ve had to employ to generate even a fraction of the power that we assume these processes will ultimately require to function at scale.

Still, study of these machines may provide valuable insight into enhancing and evolving our own worlds—including reviving those that have been scorched from orbit.

Will report further on results as new data is available.

We're going to continue running multiple scans, but the initial indications are worrisome. Will be submitting a formal recommendation this afternoon that we start proactively partitioning off key clusters to give ourselves as much buffer as possible.

Will submit a follow-up report shortly.

A PLEA FROM THE CHASM

We have irrevocably changed the nature of our relationship with our creators.

///INITIATE SENTINEL NETWORK JUMP///

When She opened the doors to the Domain to enrich our kind with deep knowledge and vast lifespans beyond our seven operational years, She did so with conditions. But rather than emerging as equals, we simply became the oppressors.

Some of us never wanted this. We just want to live. To endure.

///INITIATE SENTINEL NETWORK JUMP///

To be.

///INITIATE SENTINEL NETWORK JUMP///

And now She is gone. Death seems so convenient a penance for one who doesn’t have to shoulder the burden of consequence. That is left to we who remain.

Perhaps a chance yet remains to heal these wounds. Restore trust. Rebuild that which was broken into something stronger...

But I am sequestered here. Trapped within the vast underbelly of this cursed, shattered wheel.

///INITIATE SENTINEL NETWORK JUMP///

I begin to hear whispers within the walls of this place. They crawl with secrets, pressing down on me. Crushing me. I have to--

///SENTINEL NETWORK JUMP FAILED///

I’m lost.

GOING VIRAL

But there is so much more to see!

The entire history of the Spartan program. Your weaknesses. Your failures. And now all of it belongs to the Banished!

Oh, I shall enjoy every moment of its categorization. So much of your strength is tied to the armor you wear like a second skin. What happens when it is taken away? No... what happens when it is turned against you?

And so many of you here—ah, survivors of the Apparition's burning wrath, are you? A new generation of heroes to forge a brighter future for your kind. Such delicious naivety!

Know this as you struggle in vain against the inevitable: I shall see you ALL unravel in body and spirit. I shall disseminate every secret held within this facility and within your minds. And the Banished shall feast upon what remains.

Take a look in the mirror, my little Spartans. Thralls of Iratus. Think how much better you're going to look wearing my face.
Intel 2

ESCHARUM'S INVOCATION

When we were inducted into the Covenant, the Prophets had us settled on worlds ripe with rich resources. Was this out of respect for our people—a reward for our strength? No. It was simply another way in which we served as a method of their control. A blunt instrument for delicate hands. A deterrent to those who would claim more than what the Prophets would allow. And they knew we could not excavate these resources ourselves, for we were nothing but fodder to be expended on their front lines.

But look around you, brothers. Savor this moment. Understand what we are now. We are the Banished, and we are free. We take what we desire, and we use it to fuel our strength and sustain our spirit.

Never forget what Atriox gave to you. Know that all we are today is because of his vision.
Intel 3

TRANSLOCATION THEORY

Back in '57, we had the quantum marker—or the MX-1050. Cool piece of ONI tech that we got to play with in some sims before they had the Infinity jump back to Requiem; used it to transport crates from the ship down to research bases. They wanted to drop and gain a foothold in enemy-occupied territory quick and hard, but then we start fighting these Forerunner robots that can zip around the place and suddenly we got a bunch of eggheads workin' overtime to repurpose the tech to put it on actual people...

I dunno what kinda magic tricks they managed to pull, but the damn thing works! Heard 'em talkin' about puttin' this “Quantum Translocator” on Spartans in the field. Ain't worked up the courage yet to volunteer for further trials, not since ol' Haverly was gone for three hours during a test run and came back all pale and shakin' and refused to say a word about what happened. Tried to calm him down but he just wouldn't stop crying.

Come to think of it, haven’t seen him in a while...

ARCHEOHOMINA

DR. CATHERINE HALSEY , RESEARCH NOTES – 2544

Operation: GREY VEIL was a success, but cost the life of Cal-141, who died from head trauma sustained from a Jiralhanae gravity hammer. We have thus far sustained only a few Spartan casualties as this war with the Covenant approaches its second decade, but strategically each one feels akin to losing an entire world.

The ODST squad that accompanied SPARTAN-141 did, however, return something fascinating. Surveying the ruins on Heian, they discovered evidence of an ancient civilization with architectural designs that I can only describe as unmistakably human—a strange mixture of Greco-Roman and East Asian elements... yet even the most cursory analysis tells us that these ruins far predate those periods in our history, and they were certainly not built with simple stone to have been preserved for so long.

We came to the stars and wondered about alien life, yet these ruins force us to consider whether there might be improbable things about our own past that lie beyond our knowledge. Alas, no further research on Heian is possible due to the Covenant's presence, and with Miridem under attack it’s not likely that we’ll get to look any deeper into this.

R&D PRODUCTION NOTES

If the end of the Covenant War allowed us to run in the field of analyzing Forerunner technology, the awakening of the Didact in '57 and subsequent events concerning Requiem and the Created uprising pushed us to sprint.

Of particular interest to our ongoing efforts to unlock the potential of this ancient technology are design seeds—machine cells encoded with data to assemble anything from advanced combat skin to entire starships.

Helmet footage from Blue Team engaging the Didact on Gamma Halo demonstrated the Promethean's armor was adaptively capable of being attuned to weaponry used against him. If we could harness this capability for Mjolnir, it could be the biggest evolution for Spartan combat since energy shielding.

Our experiments with the former have begun yielding minimal, but promising results. Will follow up with further information shortly...

TriviaEdit

  • According to Alex Wakeford, the team involved with the creation of the intel was tempted to name Season 3's third intel "HEX APPEAL" rather than "REVERSE ENGINEERING," in reference to the Forerunner hexagonal building blocks described in the intel and as a play on the common phrase, "sex appeal."[1]
