The Beacon Keeper was an ancient San'Shyuum serving the Covenant in its capitol, High Charity. He was tasked with oversight of the Luminal Beacons; four impossible-to-replicate Forerunner artifacts discovered by the Covenant in the long history of their empire and capable of instant communication across the galaxy. In mid-2526, he was killed by Fleetmaster Nizat 'Kvarosee and his followers during their exile from the Covenant, as to not sound the alarm when they stole the Luminal Beacons from his care.[1]
The Beacon Keeper typically resided in the eponymously named Beacon Keeper's Vault within High Charity, with two Honor Guardsmen protecting the entrance.[1]
Biography[edit]
Earlier in the Covenant's history, the Beacon Keeper had activated the reciever unit for the fabled Lost Beacon - carried by a now-lost expedition that had returned its signalling location as the heart of the galaxy - where no Covenant starship could possibly hope to reach it.[1] It is unclear whether this individual was the same Beacon Keeper as the one holding the position in 2526, or simply someone else charged with the same task.
Ultimately, following his failed meeting with the Hierarchs, Nizat 'Kvarosee elected to return his final remaining Luminal Beacon to the Beacon Keeper before returning to Pious Rampage to await "reassignment". Unwilling to accept a quiet assassination at the hands of the Silent Shadow, Nizat instead turned to kill the blademaster Honor Guardsman who escorted him and his nine followers to the Beacon Keeper's Vault, before quickly dispatching the two other guards at the entrance. After hiding the bodies, Nizat and his entourage entered the Vault to find the Beacon Keeper asleep in his anti-gravity chair. They roused him from his sleep and forced him to reveal the location of the Luminal Beacons' receiver units - which would be needed to track the locations of the beacons. Nizat originally intended to simply tie the Beacon Keeper up and stuff him in a storage locker to be found after the group had fled High Charity - however, Yey 'Mootasee interjected and pointed out that there could be any number of hidden security measures in the vault the Beacon Keeper could use to sound the alarm. As such, all ten Sangheili - Nizat, his steward Tam 'Lakosee and eight other shipmasters - agreed to kill the Beacon Keeper and did so by simultaneously plunging their energy swords into his chest. This act cemented all of them as firmly committed to Nizat's mission of destroying the Office of Naval Intelligence - with Nizat coming to view them as his disciples. The ten would shortly steal the Flotilla of Unsung Piety from the Covenant and head to Netherop to enact their plan.[1]
