"Even the most cunning stratagems and deadly artifice of Forerunner Warrior-Servants could not stop the voracious Flood. Improved LightRifle with an extended magazine and faster rate of fire."
— In-game description[5]

The Barbed Lance is a special variant of the Z-250 Directed Energy Engagement Weapon, featured in Halo 5: Guardians as an Ultra Rare REQ variant of the LightRifle. Its chassis is the same as that of the normal LightRifle, although it is decorated by additional orange stripes flowing around the weapon's scope and main body.[6]

Background

The Barbed Lance is a named variant of the Z-250 DEEW, upgraded with a 16-round magazine and faster rate of fire. The weapon first came into use during the Forerunner-Flood war, where it was used by Warrior-Servants; even their most cunning plans and deadly artifice proved no match for the Flood. Another named variant, the Dying Star, was also used in the Forerunner-Flood war as a response to Flood pure forms.[5]

In late 2558, Spartan-IVs trained with the weapon in War Games simulations aboard the UNSC Infinity.[6]

Gameplay

Halo 5: Guardians

The Barbed Lance is an Ultra Rare Level 4 Power Weapon REQ that grants 150 REQ Points when sold. It retains the basic operation and damage output of the LightRifle, although it fires faster and has a larger magazine with 16 rounds. These modifications make the Barbed Lance a more powerful offensive weapon that can outclass the Dying Star in this aspect, as the Barbed Lance has a larger ammo capacity (maximum 80 rounds vs 56 for the Dying Star) and a faster rate of fire, giving opponents less time to react.[6]

Changes from the Z-250 Directed Energy Engagement Weapon

  • Faster rate of fire.
  • Increased magazine size of 16 rounds (+33.33%).
  • Increased ammo capacity; maximum round count is 80 (16 active + 64 reserve).
