Thread: Italicising DLC names in text

For the vast majority of Halo media, our convention is to italicise the names when writing them on the wiki, with only one exception (that I am aware of): downloadable content. The names of pieces of DLC are typically styled without italics, and in some older pages, aren't capitalised either. I cannot see any reason to treat DLC any differently in this regard to the games, novels, comics or films, and so I would like to make a relatively minor proposal to modify our convention.

I propose that, henceforth, we should:

  • Always italicise DLC names when mentioned in a body of text (i.e. Condemned was added in the Defiant Map Pack, not Condemned was added in the Defiant Map Pack)
  • Always capitalise the DLC's name as if it were a title (i.e. Blastacular Map Pack, not Blastacular map pack)
  • Also italicise and capitalise the name in the same manner in the article title on its own page, just as we do for the games, novels and other media

We can go back and adjust previous pages to follow this convention after the merger is complete. However, I believe we should decide whether to adopt this convention as soon as possible, and then begin to enforce the decision immediately, as that way, there will be less work to do later on if we need to update older pages.

Thoughts?

Agreed. While we're at it, I also think story-centric DLC should be counted in appearances lists (currently only Spearbreaker and Awakening the Nightmare, but it could change). We count different Halo Legends episodes or Evolutions short stories etc as their own entries, so I don't see why this is any different. In the case of first appearances (such as, say, Line Installation 9-12), I'd support putting in map packs too to denote that it wasn't in the vanilla product.

I agree regarding the appearances lists - in fact, I'd go even further to say that we should include all types of DLC in those lists, but only if the object in question was not in the base game. For example, on the M6D page, we should have the following, to denote that it wasn't seen in the main game:

==List of appearances==
...
*''[[Halo 2]]''
**''[[Blastacular Pack]]''
...

Yeah I agree with that sentiment. It's pointless adding them if they're in the game as a whole but for instances like that or any DLC locations it's definitely apt to make it clear it's a DLC-only thing.
