Category talk:Human Ships

From Halopedia, the Halo wiki

Specificity, cleanup of templates, etc.[edit]

I feel that, rather than slap this top-level category into every human ship out there, we should establish a more specific category tree for not only UNSC ships (not every human ship is UNSC), as well as the various classes (and in applicable cases, sub-classes) of ships within the UNSC.

Additionally, I think we should get rid of list templates like :Template:Prowlers and Template:UNSC Frigate. List templates can be useful for contained sets of subjects (e.g. specific teams or units or things like the Halo Array) where constant and boundless expansion isn't expected, but with things like individual ships of a given type we know there's going to be more of them, and in those cases categories are more useful as they don't require you to update the template as well. This is the same reason we got rid of, for example, the "ONI Personnel" and "Sangheili" list templates. Similarly, it's easier to just link to the category on those ship classes' respective pages rather than have updateable lists like we do on, say, the UNSC destroyer page. --Jugus (talk) 01:12, 12 October 2016 (EDT)

Agreed. I've actually considered this for a while. My idea is we have "Category:Ships", and within that we have "Category:Ships by affiliation" and "Category:Ships by class". Ships by affiliation can contain "Category:Unified Earth Government ships" (which then contains "Category:United Nations Space Command ships" and "Category:Colonial Military Administration ships", etc.) and "Category:Covenant ships". Ships by class can have "Category:Destroyers", "Category:Frigates", etc. Then those categories (if there is enough ships within the class to warrant it) can have, for example, "Category:Charon-class light frigates" or "Category:Paris-class heavy frigates". It would be a lot more organized after that. I'd be willing to do it. --NightHammer(talk)(contribs) 10:50, 12 October 2016 (EDT)
You have my support. It's much more reasonable to categorize ships by organization than species. --Jugus (talk) 13:11, 12 October 2016 (EDT)
It occurred to me that with the removal of the ship navbox templates, it would still be good to retain some way to have ships of a certain type listed in one place (especially if the class has no dedicated category). As such, ignore the last statement in my original post. The "Ships of the line" sections can stay, though I still think the one on the UNSC destroyer page is needlessly detailed. --Jugus (talk) 03:23, 18 October 2016 (EDT)
