Biko was a human colony world located among the Outer Colonies, roughly 24 light-years from the Cygnus system.[1] It was home to the major population center Durban.[2] Some of the SPARTAN-IIIs of Alpha Company, including Carter-A259,[3] came from Biko.[4]
History
It was one of the first planets to be glassed by the Covenant, in 2526.[5] After the battle over the planet, the debris field was pushed over the northern pole by the Covenant to allow their ships to glass the planet unobstructed. After the Human-Covenant War, the fetcher Oliver Birch visited the debris field over Biko, retrieving a "saddle box" from the UNSC Dresden, one of the cruisers that had partaken in the battle years prior.[1]
Biko was apparently recolonized by the UEG after the Covenant War. In 2558, delegates from the UEG and from another species convened in a regional embassy in a densely populated city on Biko to discuss peace talks. Both sides were coming to an agreement when rogue Spartan-II John-117 apparently entered the hall and attacked the delegates. Outer Colonies ambassador Richard Sekibo was abducted by the Spartan, who also escorted the alien delegation to safety. John fled the planet with the aliens aboard his awaiting personal spacecraft; the corpse of Sekibo was found in a nearby field the next day.[6]
Trivia
The colony may have been named after Steve Biko, a twentieth-century South African civil rights activist.
